Mr. Brewer has worked in the Ordnance and Explosives field since 1992. In his current position as an OESS with the EM CX in Huntsville, AL, Mr. Brewer supports multiple agencies performing independent technical reviews for safety submissions, work plans and remedial response reports. He is also a member of the EMCX training team, providing instruction on ordnance and explosives subject matter for FUDS Program, Army Environmental Command, the Army National Guard, M2S2 Webinar Series as well as OSHA HAZWOPER refresher training for USACE. Before coming to the EM-CX, Mr. Brewer was an OESS for USACE Baltimore District form 2006 to 2014. In 2001 he started working for the 20th Chemical Command on Edgewood Arsenal, MD, as a UXO Technician until 2006. Mr. Brewer has also served as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician in the US Marine Corps and US Air Force Reserves.


J. Kimberly Harriz, Office of Environmental Policy and Compliance, Department of the Interior
J. Kimberly Harriz is an environmental protection specialist at the Department of Interior (DOI), Office of Environmental Policy and Compliance. She serves as a technical liaison between DOI and the Department of Defense and the various components regarding military site cleanup. She also serves as the National Coordinator for the Natural and Cultural Resources Recovery Support Function to lead the federal recovery assistance to States and Tribes for natural and cultural resources, following disasters.

Kim began her Federal Civil Service career in 2009, when she worked with the Army National Guard Directorate on their Military Munitions Response Program. Prior to employment with the Federal government, she was an environmental consultant, providing technical expertise as a geologist for hazardous waste site cleanups, including projects at the Massachusetts Military Reservation and Camp Navajo.


Andy Sorum, USACE
Andy Sorum is a Project Manager for the Formerly Used Defense Sites Program in the Alaska District of the US Army Corps of Engineers. He plans and executes multi-million dollar environmental remediation projects at remote sites from the Arctic Coastline, to the western Aleutian Islands, down to the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska. Andy is an Environmental Engineering graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point. In his career, he has received commendations for leading US Army engineering missions in the Pacific Theater, has been distinguished for military construction management in the Pacific Ocean Division, and now leads award-winning teams in environmental remediation in austere environments.


Merry Maxwell, FWS
Merry Maxwell has spent 20 years with the USFWS, mostly as a refuge manager. She graduated from Humboldt State University with a BS in Biology and a minor degree in Wildlife Management with an emphasis on ornithology. Merry has spent most of her career with the Service working in Alaska but has also worked in Nevada and Virginia. She currently serves as the Formerly Used Defense Site Coordinator for the Alaska Maritime NWR, headquartered in Homer, Alaska.


David Nelson, USACE Kansas City District


Brandy Janzen, Bureau of Land Manangement (BLM) (bjanzen@blm.gov or 406-533-7632)
Brandy is the Montana/Dakotas Bureau of Land Manangement (BLM) Hazardous Materials Program Lead and a Soil Scientist. She has worked in the HazMat program from the past seven years.


Karen Zhang, Ph.D., P.E., Environmental Management Division, Office of Procurement and Property Management in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Karen Zhang oversees departmental Emergency Response and Restoration, Sustainable Practices, and BioPreferred Programs. Prior to her current position, she was an Environmental Protection Specialist in the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) serving as the National Coordinator for the Natural and Cultural Resources Recovery Support Function, overseeing the cleanup of military contaminated sites, and developing policies on land transactions. She previously worked in USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service on environmental compliance and restoration, and served as the Chief of the Environmental Unit and Remedial Project Manager at the Agricultural Research Service. Before joining the Federal government, she worked 16 years as an senior environmental engineer in private section.


Belinda R. Walker, USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region (brwalker@fs.fed.us or 909-382-2607)
Belinda Walker is the Assistant Regional Environmental for the 18 National Forests located in California. In her current position, Ms. Walker is responsible for regional management of environmental engineering programs that range from compliance to emergency response to restoration. Prior to joining the Forest Service, Ms. Walker was a Remedial Program Manager for an Air Force Base that was listed on the NPL.

Brian Jordan, SPA
Mr. Brian Jordan, Chemist, has over 20 years of experience working with munitions and hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste projects in the FUDS Program. Mr. Jordan has a B.S. in Chemistry from New Mexico State University.

Ms Balent is on the staff of the EPA's Technology Innovation and Field Services Division where she has worked to collect and disseminate hazardous waste remediation and characterization information since 2003. Ms Balent manages the Clean Up Information Network website and actively supports online communication and collaboration resources available to EPA. She formerly worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers Environmental Engineering Division in the Buffalo District. Ms Balent was also a member of the SUNY-Buffalo Groundwater Research Group where she constructed and tested large scale models of groundwater flow. Ms Balent has also conducted research relating to the Great Lakes, environmental remediation, and brownfields re-development. She holds a Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering from SUNY-Buffalo and a Master's degree in Information Technology from AIU.
