Presentation Overview:

This webinar in the CLU-IN mining webinar series will focus on using biosolids, coal combustion products, and other soil amendments for soil remediation and revegetation at mining sites. The following topics will be presented:

Utilizing biosolids as a soil amendment for mined land reclamation. This presentation will include an overview of the history of land application of biosolids to coal mined lands and other applications to mineral sands and sand and gravel mining, with a particular focus on predicting nitrate-N leaching losses.

Remediation and revegetation of phytotoxic materials with biosolids and lime. This presentation will focus on the presenter's work in Poland and Virginia on the stabilization and revegetation of coal refuse, Pb/Zn smelter slags and tailings, and acid sulfate soil materials via the application of relatively high rates of biosolids and lime.

Potentials and issues for use of coal combustion residuals (CCRs) in mined land reclamation. This presentation will focus on the potential benefits and risks of using CCRs such as fly and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) material in mined land reclamation as either surface soil amendments or bulk alkaline additions to acid-forming materials. This will include a brief synopsis of current regulatory development issues.

All three presentations will include case study data and findings that are supported by publications available from the presenter and collaborators' website www.landrehab.org
