TECHNOLOGY STATUS REPORT: A CATALOGUE OF THE HORIZONTAL ENVIRONMENTAL WELLS IN THE UNITED STATES
Kaback, Dawn S., Concurrent Technologies Corp., Denver, CO Ground-Water Remediation Technologies Analysis Center (GWRTAC). Report No: TS-02-01, 69 pp, 2002

The horizontal environmental well catalog has been updated approximately every other year since 1993. This current catalog lists 1,142 horizontal environmental wells that have been installed in the United States through the end of the year 2000 with the date of installation, location, well purpose, depth, construction method and materials. Though not a complete listing, this effort serves as a record of how the industry has evolved since the late 1980s. The text provides a history of horizontal environmental well technology; an explanation of environmental applications for horizontal wells; discussion of well design and drilling techniques, including well materials and drilling fluids used; and well development techniques. Trends associated with the installed 1,142 horizontal environmental wells included in the catalogue are also presented. Horizontal wells identified in this report have been installed for different environmental applications: soil vapor extraction (34%), ground-water or free-product extraction (28%), air sparging (21%), bioremediation (5%), characterization and/or monitoring (3%), and other [including hydraulic control] (9%).
