Ari Ferro

Ari M. Ferro has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Utah and received postdoctoral training at the University of Hamburg and the UC San Francisco. Prior to founding Phytokinetics, Inc. in 1994, he was on the Research Faculty in the University of Utah Department of Biology. His company, Phytokinetics, specializes in the phytoremediation of sites polluted with organic chemical contaminants. The company’s services include hydraulic control and cleanup of groundwater, and the treatment of surface soils and deep vadose zone soils. For some applications, special cultural practices have been developed to produce plants with specific characteristics such as deep-rooted phreatophytic trees for groundwater treatment. Phytokinetics has experience with petroleum hydrocarbons, chlorinated compounds, explosives, and pesticides. Services involve site-specific feasibility studies, system design, installation, as well as operation and maintenance. Projects have included greenhouse studies for plant selection, phytotoxicity assessment, and to monitor contaminant fate. Recent work has included the evaluation of designs for constructed treatment wetlands. Field-scale applications have been carried out throughout the United States, including projects at five Superfund sites.
