Paul Bardos / Phil Morgan, Richard Swannell, Gordon Lethbridge, UK, Frédéric PeriePaul Bardos is the managing director of r3 Environmental Technology Ltd (r3). He is also special Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Nottingham. In 1987 he was awarded a PhD from the University of Reading (Soil Science Department), after a BSc in Biology (1983) from the University of Southampton. His thesis was "The antibiotic and heavy metal tolerances of soil bacteria and heavy metal pollution". He is, a member of the Institute of Waste Management (IWM), the Society for General Microbiology, the British Society for Soil Science and the Association of Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Specialists. He takes part in the IWM Scientific and Technical Committee the Biological Treatment Working Group. He was one of the UK scientific representatives to CLARINET (The Contaminated Land Rehabilitation Network for Environmental Technologies in Europe), and a NATO/CCMS Fellow.

From 1987 to 1993 he worked at the Warren Spring Laboratory (WSL), where he established and managed research programmes on the biological treatment of wastes, and in contaminated land treatment. WSL's work on recycling and composting still has an international reputation, despite the laboratory's closure in 1994, which is a mark of the ground breaking nature of its projects at the time. This team carried out a large programme of work on the composting of mechanically refined fractions of refuse, and the possible applications for the composts produced. He also managed some of the earliest UK investigations of green waste composting for DTI and DoE. A significant part of the UK's contribution to CEN TC223's work on standards for soil improvers and growing media stem from this work. This area of work also included studies related to anaerobic digestion and large scale trials of compost from mixed waste production, centred on the Byker, Newcastle.

At WSL Prof Bardos managed projects for an international portfolio of clients, including Department of the Environment (DoE) -Contaminated Land and Liabilities -CLL- and Waste Technical Divisions, DTI, the EU, the US EPA and Private Sector clients from the UK and elsewhere in Europe. He joined The Nottingham Trent University (TNTU) in January 1994 where he initiated a research division focusing on contaminated land treatment and waste management. At CRBE work was carried out for clients including: DoE; BNF plc; ICI/European Chemical Industry/DGXII, Zeneca Environet; Ministerie VROM, The Netherlands; and the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. In January 1997 Paul established r3 Environmental Technology Limited, which carries out the range of research and consultancy projects. This company has a wide range of UK and international clients including Private and Public Sector Clients (see project listing), including research, feasibility studies, information management and commercial services in two broad sectors: waste management (particular MSW and composting) and contaminated land management (particularly risk management and remediation).
