Tackling the Carbon Footprint at Pump and Treat Projects: A Case Study in Energy Efficiency - March 10, 2009, 1:00PM-3:00PM EDT (17:00-19:00 GMT).
With the goal of advancing knowledge in green remediation best practices, over the last year EPA and Massachusetts DEP have collaborated to develop an approach to reduce the energy usage and carbon footprint at an existing pump and treat system.
This seminar presents the results of this work, including alternatives considered and the final proposal of using combined heat and power (CHP) to provide the necessary energy to power the system and to increase the efficiency of above-ground treatment components.

This seminar provides a summary of a recently-compiled document on Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on chlorinated solvent site management. The FAQ document addresses 25 key questions, providing a concise overview of current knowledge regarding management of subsurface chlorinated solvent releases. The document is intended to help state regulators, federal regulators, consultants, DoD staff and community members make better site management decisions. ESTCP hopes the document contributes to better use of resources, more effective remediation and risk management, and more productive cooperation between the parties involved in site cleanups.

ITRC Performance-based Environmental Management - March 24, 2009, 2:00PM-4:15PM EDT (18:00-20:15 GMT).
Performance-based environmental management (PBEM) is a strategic, goal-oriented methodology that is implemented through effective planning and decision logic to reach a desired end state of site cleanup.
The goal of PBEM is to be protective of human health and the environment while efficiently implementing appropriate streamlined cleanup processes.
This ITRC training presents an overview of what PBEM is, explains how and when to implement it, and describes the issues that regulators are concerned about throughout PBEM's implementation.
Case studies will be presented to illustrate successful PBEM projects.
The course is valuable not only because PBEM is being proposed and implemented at many federal and private sites throughout the country, but also because PBEM provides an opportunity to enhance all site remediation.

This document provides technical information to assist property managers and other stakeholders better understand, coordinate, and conduct ecological revitalization at contaminated properties during cleanup. Specifically, this document presents general planning and process considerations for ecological revitalization and provides technical considerations for implementing ecological revitalization of wetlands, streams, and terrestrial ecosystems during cleanup.
This document also highlights EPA's initiatives and resources that are available, and presents numerous site-specific examples and case studies where ecological revitalization has occurred (February 2009, 83 pages).

A Guide for Assessing Biodegradation and Source Identification of Organic Groundwater Contaminants Using Compound Specific Isotope Analysis (CSIA) (EPA 600-R-08-148).
When organic contaminants are degraded in the environment, the ratio of stable isotopes will often change, and the extent of degradation can be recognized and predicted from the change in the ratio of stable isotopes.
Recent advances in analytical chemistry make it possible to perform Compound Specific Isotope Analysis (CSIA) on dissolved organic contaminants such as chlorinated solvents, aromatic petroleum hydrocarbons, and fuel oxygenates, at concentrations in water that are near their regulatory standards.
The traditional approach for monitoring of concentrations of contaminants at sites often does not offer adequate information about the processes that are responsible for removal of the contaminants.
Stable isotope analyses can provide an in-depth understanding of biodegradation or abiotic transformation processes in contaminated aquifers.
Because CSIA is a new approach, there are no widely accepted standards for accuracy, precision and sensitivity, and no established approaches to document accuracy, precision, sensitivity and representativeness.
This Guide provides general recommendations on good practice for sampling, for measurement, for data evaluation and for interpretation in CSIA (December 2008, 82 pages).

Assessment of Metal Mining-Contaminated River Sediments in England and Wales (SC030136/SR4).
The UK Environment Agency has published a report on contamination of river sediments and flood plain soils by metal mines.
The report recommends the setting of new sediment and soil quality guidelines, proposes a risk-based approach to investigating sediments and floodplain soils in catchments affected by mining activities, increased monitoring of these contaminated sediments, and strategies to manage and clean-up mine-contaminated areas (November 2008, 64 pages).

US-Mexico Border 2012 Tire Group Meeting /Reunion del Grupo de Llantas de Frontera 2012, Rio Rico, Arizona, March 12-13, 2009.

2009 Conference on Design and Construction Issues at Hazardous Waste Sites, Philadelphia, PA, April 13-15, 2009.
