Superfund uses a risk-based decision framework to assess and manage human exposure to a release and the threat of a release in the environment from pollutants and contaminants. Executive Order 12898 requires EPA to identify and address, as appropriate, disproportionately high and adverse human health or environmental effects of its programs, policies and activity on minority and low-income populations to the greatest extent possible. Overview of Radiation and Chemical Ecological Risk Assessment Models and Guidance for Contaminated Sites and Selected Default Input Parameters - July 25, 2024, 2:00PM-3:30PM EDT (18:00-19:30 GMT). To help meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund program's mandate to protect human health and the environment from current and potential threats posed by uncontrolled hazardous substance (both radiological and non-radiological), pollutant, or contaminant releases, the Superfund program has developed an ecological risk assessment process as part of its remedial response program. This webinar will describe the process and results from a research project concerning factors that could potentially attribute to adverse ecological risk for biota due to radioactive contamination in soil or water at or near Superfund sites. This project reviewed models and guidance on assessing protection of biota to exposures from contamination at sites issued or recommended by federal, state, and foreign governments. The Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council (ITRC) is excited to announce the release of their new Microplastics Outreach Toolkit! The ITRC Microplastics Team created this toolkit as a companion to the ITRC Microplastics Guidance to help regulators and others explain issues surrounding microplastics to a variety of audiences. The toolkit includes general information on outreach along with fact sheets, presentations and other outreach items aimed at different audiences. Electrokinetic Enhanced In Situ Remediation Engineering Issue Paper (EPA/600/R-23/329, May 2024). EPA-ORD's Engineering Issue Papers (EIPs) are a series of technology transfer documents that summarize the latest information on selected waste treatment and site remediation technologies and related issues and present it in a conveniently accessible manner to the user community. EIPs are designed to help remedial project managers (RPMs), on-scene coordinators (OSCs), contractors, and other contaminated sites technical staff and site managers understand the type of data and site characteristics that are needed to evaluate a technology for a specific site, as well as ways to design and optimize a technology for a particular application. This latest EIP summarizes the current knowledge on electrokinetic (EK)-enhanced in situ remediation technologies that are available for addressing contaminants in low-permeability (low-k) subsurface environments where conventional hydraulic delivery technologies often face challenges.
