Road Map to Understanding Innovative Technology Options for Brownfields Investigation and Cleanup (EPA 542-B-97-002). This document focuses on the site characterization and cleanup phase of Brownfields redevelopment. It provides a framework of logical steps involved in the characterization and cleanup of a Brownfields site in order to link technology options and resources to each of these steps [June 1997, 64 pages]. Citizen Guides to Understanding Innovative Treatment Technologies The Technology Innovation Office produced this series of 11 technology specific publications to provide citizens around sites basic information on innovative technologies for remediating sites. There are English and Spanish versions of each guide. Each is four pages and may be viewed or downloaded at http://clu-in.org/techpubs.htm#July. For hard copies, contact (800) 490-9198. AATDF Technology Practices Manual for Surfactants and Cosolvents (TR-97-2). This manual, produced by the DOD Advanced Applied Technology Demonstration Facility Program at Rice University, is intended to assist decision makers with the evaluation and potential application of surfactant/cosolvent flushing for the remediation of subsurface contamination. The report provides a basic understanding of the technologies, their applicability and limitations, and an understanding of the factors to be considered when implementing projects. Innovations in Ground Water and Soil Cleanup: From Concept to Commercialization This report published by the National Research Council provides an up to date review of the capabilities and limitations of existing ground water and soil cleanup technologies. The report also recommends solutions to institutional problems and other factors that have stifled innovation in the ground water and soil cleanup industry [June 1997, 265 pages]. Issue Paper: How Heat Can Enhance In situ Soil and Aquifer Remediation (EPA 540-S-97-502) This issue paper developed by the Office of Research and Development, contains in-depth information on the properties of some common organic contaminants that affect their movement in and recovery from the subsurface as well as information on how these properties are affected by temperature [April 1997, 18 pages]. Issue Paper: Field Sampling and Selecting On-Site Analytical Methods for Explosives in Soil (EPA 540-R-97-501) This paper was produced by the EPA Federal Facilities Forum, a group of EPA scientists and engineers representing federal facility remediation interests. It identifies screening procedures for characterizing soils contaminated with explosive and propellent compounds [November 1996, 32 pages]. Hard copies, contact (800) 490-9198.
In Search of....
Field Portable Characterization and Monitoring Technologies. The EPA Technology Innovation Office is studying the use of field portable technologies for site characterization. This is part of a broad TIO effort to increase the acceptance of these technologies. Documenting the deployment of field portable technologies for site assessment will help other potential users understand that the technologies have a track record. If you know of actual sites where field portable technologies have been used in lieu of traditional laboratory sampling methods (and the information can be made publicly available), we are interested in hearing from you. Reminder!! "Advances in Innovative Ground-Water Remediation Technologies," a free one-day conference, will be held on July 31, 1997 at the Warwick Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The conference is being sponsored by the Ground-Water Remediation Technologies Analysis Center (GWRTAC) with EPA TIO. The morning session will focus on Multi-Stakeholder Initiatives in Advancing Ground-Water Remediation, and will include presentations by AATDF, SERDP, RTDF, and others. The afternoon session will focus on Recent Developments/Applications in Ground-Water Remediation Technologies, and will include discussions on phytoremediation, treatment walls, natural attenuation, and others. The EPA Technology Innovation Office is sponsoring this conference to provide specific information on current and projected business opportunities for environmental clean up and characterization technologies at the State and Federal levels, the private sector, and the international market. The agenda includes: Overview of State and Federal markets, overview of international markets, industry perspectives on technology commercialization, and Brownfields opportunities. Who subscribes to TechDirect? Over 3,000 people! The subscribers seem to fall into the following categories: federal and state agency waste program and laboratory personnel (50%); undetermined (25%); engineering firms (10%); academia (10%); and international (5%).
We have done a rough analysis of state agency subscribers. TechDirect has roughly 400 subscribers from around 40 state environmental agencies. Some states have a large number of subscribers, other few or none. States where we seem to have a low number of subscribers include: GA, IA, ID, ND, SD, HI, MI, AL, IN, TN, MO, AR, CN, AZ, MT. We do not have recognizable subscribers from remediation programs in the following states: NH, MD, RI, DC, CA, MS, WV, KS, NE, WY, and NV. Please advise us if this is not the case.
