The American Petroleum Institute (API) conducts research on the behavior and fate of petroleum in soil and groundwater, and ways to clean up underground petroleum releases. Much of the API research effort focuses on the breakdown of petroleum by naturally-occurring microscopic organisms and other processes, and ways to enhance these processes.
