Environmental Occurrence

Halogenated Monoaromatics

The chlorinated aromatics have found use in the application of dyes and as solvents and chemical feedstocks and intermediates. The sites where they are found generally are related to these uses or are disposal or solvent recycling facilities.

The chlorobenzenes are not widely found in drinking water wells or aquifers, but when present, generally are at very low levels (Zogorski et al. 2006). A search on 'chlorobenzene' in EPA's CERCLIS database which encompasses all the chlorobenzenes, shows over 350 sites reporting chlorobenzene contamination.

This report summarizes the findings of an investigation of aquifers that supply drinking water to the public. The investigation was conducted to determine the presence or absence of 55 volatile organic chemicals.
