Foreword

The Department of Defense (DOD) funded the Advanced Applied Technology Development Facility (AATDF) in 1993 with the mission of enhancing the development of innovative remedial technologies for DOD by bridging the gap between academic research and proven technologies. AATDF is led by Rice University and headed by Dr. C. Herb Ward, Foyt Family Chair of Engineering at Rice University. Dr. C.L. Oubre is the AATDF Program Manager.

To accomplish its mission, AATDF has selected 11 projects that involve the quantitative demonstration of innovative remediation technologies. An additional project was selected to assist with the dissemination of information on a key technology, surfactant/cosolvent flushing. This Technology Practices Manual for Surfactants and Cosolvents is the result of that project. The manual is being prepared in two editions, with this document being the First Edition. The Second Edition will be released late 1997. The Second Edition will refine the material in the First Edition and will include information from the field demonstrations conducted in 1996 and 1997.

This project was lead by the AATDF project manager, Dr. Don Lowe. The manual was prepared by a team of primary authors:

  • Dr. Bernard Kueper/Queens University
  • Dr. Malcom Pitts and Kon Wyatt/SURTEK
  • Dr. Tom Simpkin and Tom Sale/CH2M HILL

The authors worked closely with AATDF staff and a team of project Shepherds who provided input on the contents and reviewed the manual. The Shepherds were:

  • Dr. Stephanie Fiorenza/AATDF
  • Dr. John Fountain/SUNY at Buffalo
  • Dr. Paul Johnson/Arizona State University
  • Dr. Gary Pope/University of Texas
  • Dr. Suresh Rao/University of Florida
  • Dr. Bill Rixey/University of Houston
  • Dr. Candida West/EPA-R.S. Kerr Lab
