Background

The development of new and innovative technologies and methods for treating environmental contaminants is a critical step in the effort to cleanup the nation's hazardous waste sites. Field demonstration of these technologies is, in turn, a key step in their development. The continuing investment of public and private resources in demonstration projects represents a major commitment to promoting the technical and cost advantages offered by these technologies. The number of government-sponsored field demonstration projects of new waste cleanup technologies has grown to over 600.

Innovative Remediation Technologies: Field-Scale Demonstration Projects in North America — Report and Database

EPA compiled information on innovative remediation technology demonstration projects and reported it in Innovative Remediation Technologies: Field-Scale Demonstration Projects in North America, published in 2000. Up-to-date information on these and new innovative remediation technology demonstration projects is available in a searchable online database. The report and database consolidate key reference information in a matrix format that allows project mangers to quickly identify new technologies that may answer their cleanup needs and provides contacts for obtaining technology demonstration results and other information.

What types of projects are included in the database?

The database contains information on completed and ongoing field-scale demonstrations of innovative technologies for the treatment of environmental contaminants. Each project has either a government partner or sponsor, and covers a technology that is at or near field-deployable commercial readiness.

What types of project information does the database provide?

The matrix includes the following information for each project (as available):

Name of the technology
Type(s) of contaminant(s) treated
Technical comments
Description of the site or waste source

Demonstration date (year)
Project report title and reference
Developer/vendor contact

How often is the database updated?

EPA gathers information on new and ongoing projects from published reports, conference proceedings, other government information sources, and other reference materials on an ongoing basis. The database is updated quarterly.

Note: The online database of field-scale innovative remediation technology demonstration projects is updated quarterly. The downloadable version of the document Innovative Remediation Technologies: Field-Scale Demonstration Projects in North America, 2nd Edition is not regularly updated, and only contains projects through June 2000.

How can I submit information on a new project or update an existing one?

Project submissions for the Innovative Remediation Technologies: Field-Scale Demonstration Projects in North America Database are no longer being accepted.
