User's Guide to the Collection and Analysis of Tree Cores to Assess the Distribution of Subsurface Volatile Organic Compounds
Posted: July 9, 2008 In cooperation with the EPA's 21M2 Initiative, the USGS has completed a guide on the use of tree coring as a tool to examine subsurface VOCs. The guide examines some of the factors influencing the use of tree coring for that purpose and summarizes some case studies in which tree coring has been used to examine subsurface VOCs. Typical VOCs that have been detected in tree cores include benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene isomers, trimethyl benzene, MTBE, TCE, PCE, and cDCE. The method is inexpensive, portable, rapid, and uncomplicated.

Focused Literature Search: Emerging Contaminants
Posted: September 30, 2005 This literature search was focused on measurement methods and characterization approaches for a group of “emerging” contaminants. By emerging it is meant that they have not, or have not until recently, been seen as chemicals of concern for the Agency remedial action programs. For many of them, analysis by standard Contract Laboratory Program or SW 846 methods is unlikely to detect them or to detect them at levels of concern.

Measurement of Fugitive Emissions at
a Region I Landfill
Posted: January 28, 2004
This report discusses a new measurement technology for characterizing emissions from large
area sources. The site selected for demonstrating this technology is a superfund landfill
that is being evaluated for recreational use. Data on methane and air toxics were needed to help
determine any increased risk to those using the site. Open-path Fourier transform infrared (OPFTIR)
spectrometers were used to provide data on both background and surface emissions. These data will be
used to make decisions about potential recreational use of this site. View Report (2.2MB/PDF)

It also describes a number of factors, including regulatory acceptance and cost-effectiveness, that influence the applicability of these technologies. The focus is on long-term ground water monitoring that is generally associated with a selected remedy, such as monitored natural attenuation or pump and treat.

remote sensing of air-born contaminants. As part of this effort a resource center for this
topic has been set up. This resource center will provide descriptions and examples of uses of
open path technologies. This month's open path technology focus is light detection and ranging (LIDAR)
instrumentation. While LIDAR has a number of uses, for environmental purposes it can detect and
measure the concentration of specific chemicals in the air at prespecified ranges. This allows
for the development of chemical concentration gradient maps across a fence line or over a
tank farm.
