The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Denver Post and Philadelphia Post along with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are hosting a series of webinars based on talks given at recent Design and Construction Issues at Hazardous Waste Sites (DCHWS) Symposiums. The mission of the DCHWS symposiums is to facilitate an interactive engagement between professionals from government and the private sector related to relevant and topical issues affecting applications of engineering and science associated with cleaning up hazardous waste sites. The symposiums also serve as a platform to facilitate the exchange of information, encourage dialogue, share experiences, and build and enhance communication among design and construction professionals.
The presentation in Philadelphia focused on remedial design, construction, and operation of the in situ thermal treatment and enhanced bioremediation remedies. The webinar would provide an update on site progress since the end of 2017 and focus on the technical, contractual, and financial challenges associated with transitioning the project from EPA to the New Mexico Environmental Department after 10 years of RA-O. It will also cover the process of transitioning from ERD to monitored natural attenuation and long-term vapor intrusion mitigation and lessons learned. Finally, the webinar will present the GIS-based dashboard that we're using to integrate operation, VOC, geochemical, and microbial data to support continued system optimization (particularly ahead of the transition of RA-O to the state).

Mike Perlmutter, Jacobs
Mike Perlmutter is a Senior Environmental Engineer with Jacobs (formerly CH2M) since 2003. Mike is located in Atlanta, GA and is a licensed PE in GA, AL, NM, and WY. He has twenty years of experience developing remediation strategies, leading the evaluation of remedial alternatives to meet site objectives, designing the selected remedy, and supporting its construction, operation, and data analysis. Mike has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and an M.S. in Civil Engineering from University of Texas at Austin.
Jeff Minchak P.G., Jacobs
Jeff is a Senior Project Manager at Jacobs (formerly CH2M) since 2002. Jeff is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico and is a licensed Professional Geologist in Wyoming. Jeff has nearly 29 years of diversified experience in planning, managing, and implementing health and safety programs, site investigations and remedial actions on RCRA, CERCLA, and state-led projects. He is a senior technical resource for strategy, management, design, installation, operation, and optimization related to mitigation of indoor air vapor intrusion (VI). Manages VI mitigation projects and provides guidance on pre-design diagnostic testing, structure evaluation, and sealing activities. Manages and performs the design of VI mitigation systems for new and existing structures and manages and directs installation, startup, commissioning, and optimization of mitigation systems. Manages, designs, installs, and optimizes soil, soil vapor, and groundwater remediation systems for removal of both chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons from soil, soil vapor, and groundwater. Jeff has a B.S. in Earth Sciences from the Pennsylvania State University.

Ms Balent is on the staff of the EPA's Technology Innovation and Field Services Division where she has worked to collect and disseminate hazardous waste remediation and characterization information since 2003. Ms Balent manages the Clean Up Information Network website and actively supports online communication and collaboration resources available to EPA. She formerly worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers Environmental Engineering Division in the Buffalo District. Ms Balent was also a member of the SUNY-Buffalo Groundwater Research Group where she constructed and tested large scale models of groundwater flow. Ms Balent has also conducted research relating to the Great Lakes, environmental remediation, and brownfields re-development. She holds a Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering from SUNY-Buffalo and a Master's degree in Information Technology from AIU.
