Description
Historical activity that resulted in contamination.

PCE drycleaning operations were conducted at this site from 1987 to 1998. A dry drop-off facility currently occupies the bay that formerly housed the drycleaning operation. The site is located in a shopping center in a retail commercial/residential setting. The identified contaminant source area at the site is soil beneath the faciliyt floor slab in the vicinity of the drycleaning machine.

Technologies

In Situ Monitored Natural Attenuation
 

Why the technology was selected:
Monitored natural attenuation was chosen as the groundwater remedy because contaminant concentrations in groundwater were relatively low and some PCE daughter products were present. Our Program experience shows that soil remediation alone can be sufficient to close sites with low contaminant concentrations in groundwater.

Date implemented:
April 5, 2001

Results to date:
The SVE system was turned off in May of 2002. Confirmatory soil sampling showed that the system had effectively remediated contaminated soils. The site was placed in monitored natural attenuatin. The last two consecutive groundwater monitoring events (latest event conducted in July 2009) showed that no contaminants were detected in groundwater in concentrations exceeding cleanup target levels.

Next Steps:
A Site Rehabilitation Completion Order was issued for this site on September 30, 2009.

All technologies: Design: $21,300 Implementation: $66,000

In Situ Soil Vapor Extraction
 

Why the technology was selected:
Soil vapor extraction was chosen as the soil remedial technology because it is an effective technology for removing VOCs from permeable, unsaturated sediments.

Date implemented:
April 5, 2001

Final remediation design:
The SVE system consisted of one 4-inch diameter vertical vapor extraction well screened from 0,5 - 4.5 ft BLS. The well was installed beneath the facility floor slab at the former location of the drycleaning machine. The system is powered by a 3 HP Rotron blower. Off gas is treated via two (2) 170 lb. G.A.C. canisters. Design flow rate is 66 scfm at a vacuum of 63 inches w.c. Estimated radius of influence is approximately 30 ft.
