Former Summer Custom Cleaners, Memphis, Tennessee

Description
Historical activity that resulted in contamination.

The site operated as a drycleaning facility from 1968 until 2005. The facility is part of a three store strip mall that is currently being used as a clothing retailer. PCE was the only drycleaning solvent used on the property. The contamination source area is located in the rear of the facility in the location of the former drycleaning machine. There are no municipal drinking water wells within a one-mile radius of the site, nor any private drinking water wells in the vicinity of the site.

In Situ Biostimulation
 

Why the technology was selected:
Enhanced reductive dechlorination was selected at the Former Summer Custom Cleaners site by Innovative Environmental Technologies (IET)due to the concentration levels of PCE's anaerobic daughter products that indicated that reductive dechlorination was occurring at the site and needed to be stimulated.

Date implemented:
Fall 2008- Biostimulation and Zero Valent Iron

Final remediation design:
Innovative Environmental Technologies Inc implemented and designed the full-scale remedial design for the site. 18 direct-push injections were advanced at the site to distribute remedial materials from 15-17 feet bgs and 22-24 feet bgs. These depths were chosen at the site based on the depths of the sand and gravel layers across the site. The remedial event distributed 2,640 pounds of ZVI, 800 pounds of calcium propionate, 200 pounds of yeast extract, 160 pounds of an oxygen scavenger, vitamins B-2 and B-12, and 1,500 pounds of HRC.

Results to date:
The immediately affected on-site well has experienced a large decrease in all CVOC concentrations, with PCE concentrations decreasing by 92.74% after ten months following the injection event. The concentration of PCE decreased from 4,009 ug/L in November 2007 to 990 ug/L in April 2009, 4 months after the injection event, to 291 ug/L, 10 months after the injection event. The closely affected on-site wells (wells outside of the remedial event's radius of influence) have experienced large decreases in all CVOC concentrations. In all but one monitoring well, CVOC decreases were in excess of 70% since the injection event.

Another round of sampling is approved for Spring 2010.
