Historical activity that resulted in contamination.

Same Day Cleaners is an acitve PCE drycleaning facility that has been in operation since 1994. It is located in a shopping center in a mixed retail/commercial setting. The identified contaminant source area is the soil beneath the facility floor slab in the vicinity of the drycleaning machine.

Technologies

In Situ Monitored Natural Attenuation
 

Why the technology was selected:
Monitored natural attenuation was selected because of the low contaminant concentrations in groundwater and the Florida Drycleaning Solvent Cleanup Program's experience with using SVE only to remediate sites with soil contamination and low level groundwater contamination.

Results to date:
SVE system was shut down on July 31, 2008. The site then went into post-active remedial monitoring. On June 22, 2011, a fourth consecutive groundwater monitoring event detected no contaminants in groundwater in concentrations exceeding any cleanup target levels.

Next Steps:
A Site Rehabilitation Completion Order was issued for the site on November 23, 2011.

In Situ Soil Vapor Extraction
 

Why the technology was selected:
Soil vapor extraction was selected because it is an effective remedial technology for recovering VOCs from permeable, unsaturated sediments.

Date implemented:
SVE startup: April 5, 2007

Final remediation design:
The SVE system consists of nine (9) vapor extraction wells. Six of these wells are screened 2-10 ft BLS and three of the wells are screened 16-26 ft BLS. The system is powered by a 15 HP blower. Off gas is treated via a 140-lb. G.A.C. vessel. Design flow rate for the shallow vapor extraction wells is 75 scfm and the desing flow rate for the three deep vapor extraction wells is 22 scfm.

Results to date:
SVE system was shut down on July 31, 2008. The site then went into post-active remedial monitoring. On June 22, 2011, a fourth consecutive groundwater monitoring event detected no contaminants in groundwater in concentrations exceeding any cleanup target levels.

Lessons Learned

Conventional soil sampling found only low concentrations of contaminants at the site. However, modified active soil gas sampling conducted during the assessment recovered soil gas samples with PCE concentrations as high as 9.2 milligrams/cubic meter.
