State Coalition for Remediation of Drycleaners Site Profiles

Dry Clean USA #11522, Heathrow, Florida

Description
Historical activity that resulted in contamination.

PCE drycleaning operations were conducted at this site from 1989 until 2008. The facility is located in a shopping center in a mixed residential/retail commercial setting. The identified contaminant source areas at the site were the soils beneath the facility floor slab in the vicinity of the drycleaning machine and the area outside the delivery door of the facility.

Remediation Status: In groundwater monitoring

Contaminants
Contaminants present and the highest amount detected in both soil and groundwater.

Contaminant Media Concentration (ppb) Nondetect
cis-1,2-Dichloroethene groundwater
Tetrachloroethene (PCE) groundwater
Tetrachloroethene (PCE) soil
Trichloroethene (TCE) groundwater

Technologies

In Situ Monitored Natural Attenuation

Results to date:
The MPE unit was shut down on September 24, 2004 after 30 months of operation. Since that time the system has been in post-active remedial monitoring. For a groundwater monitoring event conducted on March 15, 2011, only one well produced a groundwater sample with a contaminant concentration exceeding an MCL: 3.7 ug/L PCE

Next Steps:
Continue groundwater monitoring.

Cost to Design and Implement:
$225,500 (all technologies)

In Situ Multi Phase Extraction

Date implemented:
March 26, 2002

Final remediation design:
The multi-phase extraction system consists of one recovery well screened 3-30 ft BLS. Groundwater recovery is via a pneumatic pump powered by a 7.5 HP continuous rotary screw compressor. Design flow rate is 27 scfm at 125 psi. The vacuum blower for the SVE system is a 10 HP blower. Design flow rate is 75 scfm @ 10 inches of mercury. Recovered water is treated via two 200-lb. liquid phae G.A.C. units. Off gas is treated via two (2) vapor phase G.A.C. units.
