Ineeda Cleaners - Northgate, Hutchinson, Kansas

Description
Historical activity that resulted in contamination.

Ineeda Cleaners, 525 W. 30th was located in the Northgate Shopping Center in a retail development bordered by retail, residential and a church school. PCE was identified in the vicinity as part of an ESI in 1993 and the Kansas Drycleaning Program completed an ESA in 1997. Source area remediation was necessary. Contamination is primarily from leaks in the sanitary sewer lines. A sewer line runs perpendicular to groundwater flow and had multiple leaks along the first 1,000 feet of the line. These leaks created several finger-like plumes extending from the sewer line with the main plume extending from the facility.

Remediation Status: In groundwater monitoring

Contaminants
Contaminants present and the highest amount detected in both soil and groundwater.

Contaminant Media Concentration (ppb) Nondetect

Remediation Scenario

Cleanup Goals:
Groundwater - reduce concentrations to below MCLs (PCE & TCE = 5 ppb).
Soil - Reduce soil concentrations to below Risk-based Standadrds for Kansas (RSK)(PCE = 180 ppb).

Technologies

In Situ Air Sparging

Why the technology was selected:
Sandy geology is very conducive to SVE and AS. Technology is proven in this region.

Date implemented:
Two SVE well were implemented in 4/1/98 and the enhanced SVE/AS system was started 5/3/99.

Final remediation design:
Two SVE wells were installed in 1998 with one being an interior 2"-ID well near the dry cleaning machine. The exterior well was a 4" well near the sewer line connection. The Enhanced SVE/AS system added five 4" SVE wells and eleven 2" AS wells. SVE blower is a 3 HP, 460V Rotron model capable of 200 cfm @ 10" of water. The AS system consists of two, 10HP, 460 V, Becker oil-less compressors capable of 50 cfm @ 10 psi. SVE wells operated around 30 scfm @ 12" water. AS wells operated around 10 scfm @ 10 psi.

Results to date:
SVE/AS system was shut down in approx. Jan 2002 due to the system reaching asymptotic conditions and groundwater concentrations that were below MCLs. The AS/SVE system was removed in August 2002 due to renovation of the strip mall property and the reduction of contaminants. Groundwater at the source area rebounded slightly above MCLs in 2003, but natural attenuation is acceptable for the lingering contamination.

Next Steps:
Long term monitoring to ensure natural attenuation is acceptable at this site.

Cost to Design and Implement:
SVE - $27,125 SVE/AS Enhancement - $76,722

In Situ Air Stripping

Other technologies used:
Pilot test using a NoVOCs in-well stripping system was conducted. Overall technology was successful, but NoVOCs was determined to be cost prohibitive for this site due to fouling issues and use fees.

In Situ Soil Vapor Extraction

Lessons Learned

Hand augering the interior SVE well is very hard work, but well worth the effort for reducing the mass in the soil.

Thorough evaluation around the sewer line was very beneficial at this site due to the detection of multiple leaks in the line for up to 1,000 feet from the dry cleaning facility.

Longer rebound evaluation is preferred, but property owner renovations led KDHE to remove the system earlier than normal due to a parking lot resurfacing project.
