Stanford Saper Cleaners, Kansas City, Missouri

Description
Historical activity that resulted in contamination.

Stanford Saper Cleaners had been a tenant of Brookside Retail Center since 1960. Soil sampling performed in July 1999 confirmed tetrachloroethene was present at the site.

Remediation Status: Site closed

Contaminants
Contaminants present and the highest amount detected in both soil and groundwater.

Contaminant Media Concentration (ppb) Nondetect
cis-1,2-Dichloroethene soil 90 ppb
Tetrachloroethene (PCE) soil 392,000 ppb
Trichloroethene (TCE) soil 123 ppb

Remediation Scenario

Cleanup Goals:
Remediate site to 49 mg/kg cleanup goal in CALM document Scenario A.
In January 2004 new owner submitted a corrective action plan for the site.

Technologies

In Situ Bioremediation

Why the technology was selected:
Potable water with a 2% carbon source such as food grade molasses or corn syrup into the building rock foundation and adjacent soil. An application for a Class V permit was submitted to the Water Protection Division.

Date implemented:
February 10, 2004 was start date to remove floor and debris from the building interior. A drain system will be installed in the excavation prior to backfilling the excavation. System includes trench drain beneath and adjacent to building with fill/injecti

Results to date:
In 2004, 585 cuyd (655 tons) of PCE-contaminated (conc between 0.1 and 40 ppm) soil were sent to landfill. 7500 lbs of PCE-contaminated (conc >40 ppm)soil were incinerated. Total soil removal area approx 35 X 75 ft down to 6 ft bgs. Prior to backfill, a 4-line Enhanced Reductive De-Chlorination (ERD) trench system was installed. The system was designed to saturate soil from 6 to 16 ft bgs with carbon source material.

Next Steps:
ERD injected into fill ports once every 2 weeks until carbon source detected in outlying monitoring well, which took several months. After additional rounds of sampling, site was closed in Oct 2005 with Restrictive Covenant to ensure: (1) site remains commercial use and (2) no domestic use of groundwater.
