Former Aunt Bea's Cleaners (D-19-207), Nashville, Tennessee

Description
Historical activity that resulted in contamination.

Abandoned drycleaning facility that is located in a commercial/residential area of Nashville. This facility operated from 1954 to 1998 and used PCE drycleaning solvent. The facility was demolished in 1999 and is now the parking lot for a bank. No records of any spills or releases remained from the drycleaning operation. The facility used transfer drycleaning machines in it's early years of operation which were filled by transfering PCE from a 55-gallon drum by bucket and pouring it into the machines. It was reported by a former employee that waste/sludge from these machines was routinely dumped onto the ground at the rear of the former facility. There are no private drinking water wells or municipal water intakes in the area of concern. No previous remedial activities have been performed at this site.

Remediation Status: In active remediation

Technologies

In Situ Chemical Oxidation

Why the technology was selected:
ISCO (Sodium permanganate) - Treatment area was relatively small and geochemical testing indicated that ISCO would be the most effective method of treating the remaining soil contamination and groundwater contamination.

Date implemented:
ISCO Injections (September 18, 2006, November 17, 2006 and April 12, 2007)

Final remediation design:
ISCO Injections (September 18, 2006, November 17, 2006 and April 12, 2007) - During each of the scheduled ISCO events 32 gallons of 10% sodium permanganate solution and water was injected into each of the nine previously installed injection points and the injection gallery. The injection points were installed to the soil/bedrock interface and consisted of 1-inch PVC screen and riser finished at the surface. The injection gallery was constructed of 2-inch PVC screen and riser. All three events went according to the submitted work plan without deviation. Consultants currently reviewing source reduction results and designing any final remediation.

Results to date:
Pre-Permanganate injection contaminant levels, July 18, 2006 PCE - 0.140 mg/L TCE - 0.020 mg/L DCE - 0.190 mg/L VC - BDL Post-injection contaminant levels: June 16, 2008 PCE - 0.091 mg/L TCE - 0.022 mg/L DCE - 0.095 mg/L VC - BDL

Next Steps:
Additional Chem-ox and GW monitoring.

Cost to Design and Implement:
$74.141.00 (all technologies)

Ex Situ Soil Removal

Why the technology was selected:
Soil excavation was used to remove the soil contamination in the source area down to the soil/bedrock interface.

Date implemented:
1st Excavation Event - July 21/22, 2004, 2nd Excavation Event - June 20, 2006

Final remediation design:
1st Excavation Event - July 21/22, 2004 - 40 cubic yards of special waste and 10-55 gallon drums of hazardous waste were removed from the rear of the facility. Excavation was then filled with clean backfill, re-compacted and asphalted. 1 inch Probe points were instaled for additional characterization in 2005. The points were subsequently used for injection. The 8 points were located the former building footprint area. The vertical points ranged from 7.5 to 17 feet bgs (5 foot screens). 2nd Excavation Event - June 20, 2006 25 tons of contaminated soil was removed from the former building's footprint. Prior to backfilling an injection gallery, consisting of slotted 2 - inch PVC pipe and solid PVC risers, was place into the bottom of the pit, approximately 5 feet bgs. Consultants currently reviewing source reduction results and designing any final remediation.

Results to date:
Pre-Permanganate injection contaminant levels, July 18, 2006 PCE - 0.140 mg/L TCE - 0.020 mg/L DCE - 0.190 mg/L VC - BDL Post-injection contaminant levels: June 16, 2008 PCE - 0.091 mg/L TCE - 0.022 mg/L DCE - 0.095 mg/L VC - BDL
