Project Name:   Phytoremediation at Fort Wainwright in Alaska
Site History and Background:   Sources of waste include pesticide manufacturing, use, and storage and drum storage and disposal. Soil was excavated and relocated into lined treatment cells for phytoremediation.
Scale:   Full
Project Status:   Complete
Project Start Date:   1997
Project Completion Date:   2002

4,4'-DDD Soil
4,4'-DDT Soil
Dieldrin Soil
Total petroleum hydrocarbons Soil
Phytotechnology Mechanism(s):   Phytoremediation
Phytoextraction
Rhizodegradation
Plants and other Vegetation Used:   Felt Leaf Willow
Planting Description:   Invasive species (felt leaf willow) took over site
Planting Area:   0.18 acre
Evapotranspiration Rates:   Not available
Climate:   Temperature range: -62 to 96 F; Mean annual precipitation: 10.9 inches; Elevation: 599 feet; Growing season: 5/25 to 8/25.
O & M Requirements:   Corn syrup, alcohol amendments, saturated, fertilized, irrigated, fenced.
Performance Data:   Aldrin concentrations decreased but dieldrin concentrations did not.
Cost of the Phytotechnology Project:   Not available
Lessons Learned:   After treatment, soils from site were deposited in Fort Wainwright landfill rather than an offsite hazardous waste landfill.
Comments:   Soil excavated and relocated into lined treatment cells for phytoremediation.
