Thermal Treatment (In Situ) Design Elements | ||
General description | The SRSNE Site is a fenced 2-acre facility situated in the Town of Southington. The facility operated as an EPA-approved hazardous waste treatment and storage facility. The facility received various waste industrial solvents that were mixed together for use as a fuel product. From 1957 to 1967, waste sludges were disposed of in two unlined lagoons. Sludge disposal was discontinued in 1967, and the lagoons were drained and covered with fill. After the lagoons were closed, wastes were burned in an open pit onsite or disposed of offsite. In the 1970s, the State of Connecticut ordered that the incineration processes be discontinued. In 1979, EPA filed suit against SRSNE under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) for contaminating the Town of Southington Production Wells No. 4 and No. 6, and, under the Clean Water Act for un-permitted discharge of pollutants to the Quinnipiac River. The Well No. 4 is located approximately 2,000 feet south of the site, and Well No. 6 is located 1,300 feet to the south of the site. Both wells were closed in 1979 because of contamination. The 1979 suit filed by EPA was amended in 1982 to include claims under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). The Site was listed on EPA’s National Priorities List (NPL) in September 1983. In 1991, all activities at the site were terminated in preparation for permanent closure. Currently, there is no disposal of hazardous waste occurring at the site. |
