Combined Remedies: Adaptive, Flexible, Attentive Use of the Right Tools

Combining remedies is becoming increasingly prevalent across the spectrum of hazardous waste sites from relatively simple to more complex. This trend is driven by 1) a larger remedial tool box; and 2) by increased understanding that contamination occurs in different phases and concentrations, and in different subsurface compartments.

Combining remedies is only part of the story. Flexible, attentive, adaptive deployment is equally important as surprises are not uncommon and conditions change during remedy implementation. This webinar will discuss the underlying principles of attentive deployment of a variety of remedial technologies along with informative case studies - with particular emphasis on NPL sites.

Jim Cummings is in the Technology Assessment Branch in the Office of Site Remediation and Technology Innovation at EPA headquarters. He has over 25 years of experience in the development, evaluation and deployment of innovative tools for the characterization and remediation of hazardous waste sites. He provides technical support to federal and state RPMs in cleanup of wood treaters, former Manufactured Gas Plants (MGPs) and chlorinated solvent sites. He has chaired sessions and presented at dozens of domestic and international remediation conferences. Recent interests include the use of combined remedies to exploit synergies among technologies and accelerate site closure.

Michele Mahoney is a Soil Scientist working on issues related to remediation and reuse of contaminated sites within EPA's Superfund program. In order to support practitioners, she researches and reports on knowledge related to treatment technologies for mining sites, use of soil amendments for remediation and redevelopment/reuse, ecological revitalization, ecosystem services, phytotechnologies, and urban gardening. Michele develops and delivers training for the world-renown EPA Clean-Up Information Network (www.cluin.org), particularly a Mining Webinar Series, and topics related to Superfund Redevelopment, Ecological Revitalization, Ecosystem Services, and Phytotechnologies. She also creates and manages content development for the EcoTools and Mining pages on CLU-IN.org.

Michele has worked with EPA for over 20 years. Prior to her current responsibilities, Michele served the Agency as the lead for food waste composting issues and as an environmental fate and ecological risk assessor for pesticide registration. Michele also has experience as a Contractor for EPA and a Laboratory and Field Researcher.

Michele earned a M.S. in Soil Science from the Washington State University, and a B.S. in Agronomy & Environmental Science from Delaware Valley University.

Cindy Frickle is a physical scientist with EPA's Superfund program where she reviews and propagates technical information to site cleanup professionals through Clu-In, EPA forums, and interagency channels. Prior to joining EPA, she spent time characterizing contaminated sites, coring sediments, studying microbes, and teaching. She completed her Biogeology MS and Geology BS in the University of Minnesota's School of Earth Sciences.
