Performance Measures and Environmental Indicators

The Environmental Indicators Webinar is a two-hour training course that will discuss the purpose of environmental indicators and different tools available to Remedial Project Managers (RPM) who make environmental indicator determinations at their Superfund sites as well as other federal agency and state representatives that work on these sites, particularly at federal facilities. By taking the course, participants will achieve the following objectives:
- Understand the role of environmental indicators in the Superfund remedial program.
- Learn how to identify Human Exposure Under Control status of a site.
- Learn how to identify Groundwater Migration Under Control status of a site.
- Apply your understanding of environmental indicators through interactive polling and discussion.
- Identify interrelationships with other Superfund components such as five-year reviews, sitewide ready for anticipated reuse determinations, and risk determinations.
- Become familiar with EPA guidance, tools, and other reference materials on environmental indicators The instructional methodology for this course includes lecture and interactive polling with opportunity for questions and discussion from participants.
The target audience for this course is RPMs, federal agency representatives, and state representatives that work on federal facilities.

Emy Laija is an Environmental Scientist who works on Superfund cleanups of hazardous waste sites through the EPA Federal Facility Restoration and Reuse Office (FFRRO) in Washington, DC. Her position includes implementing national policy, promoting consistency in cleanups, developing training, and developing relationships with other federal agencies and stakeholders. Before working in FFRRO, Emerald worked as a Remedial Project Manager for 8 years in EPA's Hanford Project Office in Richland, WA and continues to serve as a Hanford subject matter expert. She earned a Master's Degree focused in Environmental Studies from University of Nevada-Las Vegas and a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Texas at El Paso.
Laura Buelow, EPA Region 10 (Buelow.laura@epa.gov or 509-376-5466)
Laura Buelow has been a Remedial Project Manager (RPM) for 12 years at EPA Region 10's Hanford Project Office located in Richland, Washington. She has a Bachelor's of Science in biochemistry from Southern Oregon University and a Ph.D in biochemistry from Utah State University. Her experience includes radionuclide remediation, risk assessments along the Columbia River, and groundwater investigations and cleanup. She has worked on a variety of both private and federal facility Superfund sites including Hanford, Mountain Home Air Force Base, St. Maries Creosote Site, Martin Marietta Aluminum Smelter, Upper Columbia River, and Idaho National Laboratory. In her spare time, Laura enjoys spending as much time as possible recreating outdoors with her husband and 2 boys.

Ms Balent is on the staff of the EPA's Technology Innovation and Field Services Division where she has worked to collect and disseminate hazardous waste remediation and characterization information since 2003. Ms Balent manages the Clean Up Information Network website and actively supports online communication and collaboration resources available to EPA. She formerly worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers Environmental Engineering Division in the Buffalo District. Ms Balent was also a member of the SUNY-Buffalo Groundwater Research Group where she constructed and tested large scale models of groundwater flow. Ms Balent has also conducted research relating to the Great Lakes, environmental remediation, and brownfields re-development. She holds a Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering from SUNY-Buffalo and a Master's degree in Information Technology from AIU.
