Mining Webinar Series: Ecological Revitalization at the Henry's Knob Former Mining Site

An innovative remedy at the Henry's Knob Superfund Alternative site is protecting public health and the environment while also serving as vital native habitat for pollinators and other species. The remedy was designed by Amec Foster Wheeler Environment and Infrastructure (Amec Foster Wheeler) for a Confidential Client who was one of the site’s responsible parties. A collaborative working relationship between the responsible party, Amec Foster Wheeler, EPA, and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) made revitalization of the former mine site possible.

Michele Mahoney is a Soil Scientist working on issues related to remediation and reuse of contaminated sites within EPA's Superfund program. In order to support practitioners, she researches and reports on knowledge related to treatment technologies for mining sites, use of soil amendments for remediation and redevelopment/reuse, ecological revitalization, ecosystem services, phytotechnologies, and urban gardening. Michele develops and delivers training for the world-renown EPA Clean-Up Information Network (www.cluin.org), particularly a Mining Webinar Series, and topics related to Superfund Redevelopment, Ecological Revitalization, Ecosystem Services, and Phytotechnologies. She also creates and manages content development for the EcoTools and Mining pages on CLU-IN.org.

Michele has worked with EPA for over 20 years. Prior to her current responsibilities, Michele served the Agency as the lead for food waste composting issues and as an environmental fate and ecological risk assessor for pesticide registration. Michele also has experience as a Contractor for EPA and a Laboratory and Field Researcher.

Michele earned a M.S. in Soil Science from the Washington State University, and a B.S. in Agronomy & Environmental Science from Delaware Valley University.

Mr. Shephard is an Associate Project Manager at Amec Foster Wheeler Environment and Infrastructure, Inc. with over 28 years of experience focused on environmental and hazardous waste engineering and consulting. His project experience encompasses coordination and implementation of field investigations, remedial investigations, feasibility studies, conceptual design, engineering, and permitting of remedial design projects, construction oversight, and project and program management. He is familiar with both public and private sector client requirements, and has experience working with both chemical and radiological contamination. Mr. Shephard has a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, is a registered Professional Engineer in Maine, and is a registered Licensed Environmental Profession in Connecticut. Mr. Shephard currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Council of Engineering Companies of Maine. Mr. Shephard resides in Cape Elizabeth, Maine with his wife and their 7-year old son.

Mr. Johnstone is a Principal Geologist/Project Manager at Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & Infrastructure, Inc. with over 25 years of experience in environmental investigation and remediation. Mr. Johnstone is experienced in performing preliminary environmental liability assessments (audits) of commercial and industrial properties and has conducted complex hydrogeological assessments at industrial properties in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Kentucky. Mr. Johnstone has managed over 200 Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, over 140 environmental site assessments (Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, Comprehensive Site Assessments, Remedial Investigations, etc.), and over 20 environmental remediation projects. He has also managed or been involved with numerous municipal solid waste landfill, stormwater and spill prevention plan, NPDES permitting, and asbestos projects as well as several projects involving combinations of environmental, geotechnical, materials testing and facilities engineering scopes of services. Mr. Johnstone has a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Duke University, a Master of Science degree in Geology from Oklahoma State University and is a registered Professional Geologist in South Carolina and North Carolina. Mr. Johnstone is a Registered Site Manager (RSM) for the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Registered Environmental Consultant Program. Mr. Johnstone is a past board member and president of the Carolina Geological Society and resides in Easley, South Carolina.

Mr. Provencher is a Senior Civil Engineer at Amec Foster Wheeler Environment and Infrastructure, Inc. with 17 years of experience in engineering, consulting, and construction administration. He has experience in mine reclamation; remediation of radiologically and chemically contaminated soils, sediments and buildings; facility decommissioning including safe shutdown, decontamination, and demolition of structures; handling, management, transportation, and proper disposal of non-hazardous, hazardous, and radiological wastes; and environmental permitting. He has served as engineer of record, project engineer, design lead, and construction manager for projects in both private and public sectors under the requirements of CERCLA, RCRA, and voluntary remedial action programs. Mr. Provencher has a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Maine and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science, Conservation Law, from Unity College. Mr. Provencher is a registered Professional Engineer licensed in Maine, Connecticut, South Carolina, and New York and holds Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Project Manager (CPM) credentials. Mr. Provencher resides in Maine with his wife and their three children.

Ms Balent is on the staff of the EPA's Technology Innovation and Field Services Division where she has worked to collect and disseminate hazardous waste remediation and characterization information since 2003. Ms Balent manages the Clean Up Information Network website and actively supports online communication and collaboration resources available to EPA. She formerly worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers Environmental Engineering Division in the Buffalo District. Ms Balent was also a member of the SUNY-Buffalo Groundwater Research Group where she constructed and tested large scale models of groundwater flow. Ms Balent has also conducted research relating to the Great Lakes, environmental remediation, and brownfields re-development. She holds a Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering from SUNY-Buffalo and a Master's degree in Information Technology from AIU.
